Niche or Designer: Finding Your Fragrance

Niche and designer perfume bottles compared side by side

Niche and designer are useful terms when browsing fragrances, but neither label tells you whether a particular scent will suit you.

What do the terms mean?

Niche commonly describes houses whose identity centres on perfumery, such as Nishane. Designer commonly describes fragrances from fashion or luxury houses, such as Prada and Yves Saint Laurent. The boundaries can overlap, so use these labels as a starting point rather than a quality ranking.

Start with the scents you enjoy

Do you prefer citrus and fresh scents, woods and spices, or vanilla and warmer compositions? Compare fragrances from both groups that match your preferences. A niche fragrance is not necessarily heavy, and a designer fragrance is not necessarily light.

Try before choosing a full bottle

Read the description and notes, then try the fragrance on more than one occasion. A small decant can help you decide whether you enjoy wearing it before selecting a larger size. Explore both groups at Areej and let your own experience guide the choice.
