How to Read Fragrance Notes Before Choosing
Fragrance notes describe the impressions and scents that shape a perfume’s character. They are not a literal list of every ingredient. The top, heart and base framework helps you picture how a scent develops.
Top notes: the first impression
These describe what you notice at the beginning. Avoid judging only by the first spray, as the opening may differ from the character that follows.
Heart notes: the central character
The heart describes the core of the composition. Depending on the fragrance, this may include floral, aromatic or spicy impressions.
Base notes: the lasting character
The base describes the more persistent part of the composition, which may include woods, musk or other impressions. These groups overlap rather than always appearing as clearly separated stages.
Use notes as a guide
Identify scents you enjoy, compare descriptions and then try the fragrance. One favourite note does not guarantee that every fragrance featuring it will suit you: the balance of the whole composition matters.
